The Coronavirus Crisis and the Criminal Justice System

The Brennan Center is putting forth recommendations and compiling the formal policy responses from all levels of the criminal justice system to address the Covid-19 public health crisis.

Published: March 27, 2020

The Brennan Center has compiled policy and advocacy responses detailing how different levels of the criminal justice system are responding to this public health crisis. This includes ways in which law enforcement, prosecutors, criminal courts, corrections agencies, and immigration agencies can better safeguard their communities and the broader public during this pandemic. We have also highlighted some agencies and government leaders who are reimagining their practices during this pandemic. We hope this compendium of recommendations will encourage more jurisdictions and agencies to take the steps necessary to dramatically reduce the incarcerated population and, hopefully, mitigate the worst consequences of this developing crisis.

Every day, agencies are articulating new practices and policies to better protect their communities during this crisis. We will update this resource page regularly.
