Letter to House Judiciary Committee in Support of the For the People Act

The bill would commit to a renewed Voting Rights Act, restore voting rights to individuals with a felony conviction in their past, combat deceptive practices that suppress the vote, revitalize the campaign finance system, and more.

On Janu­ary 29, 2019, the Bren­nan Center submit­ted a letter to the House Judi­ciary Commit­tee express­ing strong support for H.R. 1—the For the People Act of 2019. The letter was entered into the record during the Commit­tee’s Janu­ary 29 hear­ing, which focused on a sub-set of crit­ical reforms contained in the For the People Act. The letter commu­nic­ated the Bren­nan Center’s support for the meas­ures under the Commit­tee’s consid­er­a­tion, includ­ing provi­sions that reflect Congress’s commit­ment to a renewed Voting Rights Act; restore voting rights to indi­vidu­als with a felony convic­tion in their past; combat decept­ive prac­tices that suppress the vote; reform the redis­trict­ing process; revital­ize the campaign finance system; and strengthen federal ethics rules.
