Today the Federal Election Commission issued new rules on the use of campaign funds to pay for home and personal security for federal candidates and officeholders. Until now, the commission approved these expenditures on a case-by-case basis. The new guidance makes the option available to all federal candidates and officeholders, within the rules’ limits.
Daniel Weiner, director of the Elections and Government Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law and former senior counsel for the Federal Election Commission, had the following comment:
“With the rise of intimidation and violence targeting people in politics, officeholders and candidates need security to protect themselves and their families, and to do their jobs. Today’s new campaign finance rules from the Federal Election Commission will make it easier for federal candidates and officeholders to get the security they need. We applaud the commission for helping to protect our democracy by taking this important step.”
