The legendary Martin Garbus is one of the country’s leading trial lawyers. He has appeared before the Supreme Court as well as trial and appellate courts throughout the nation in over 100 cases, covering mainly First Amendment and civil rights issues. He defended activist Cesar Chavez and other members of the United Farm Workers Union on criminal charges in California, Florida, and Texas. Other notable clients include Nelson Mandela, Andrei Sakharov, Daniel Ellsberg, Spike Lee, Lenny Bruce, Al Pacino, Michael Moore, and countless other iconic figures.
In his most recent book, Martin Garbus zeroes in on another of his high-profile cases: defending five Cuban men charged in connection with the 1996 downing of two planes over Havana. What lessons can we draw from this case about the U.S. justice system, American politics, and the complicated relationship between the United States and Cuba?
