House Democrats to Unveil Democracy Reform Agenda

Brennan Center welcomes major voting and money in politics reforms – key priorities of the Center

The incoming House Democratic leadership today is expected to unveil their proposal for a comprehensive reform bill that would bolster voting rights, curb big money in politics, and take additional steps to strengthen our democracy. The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law has long advocated for many of the reforms in the bill – including automatic voter registration, early voting, and small donor public financing.

Wendy Weiser, director of the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program, said the following:

“This bill is a big deal. For the first time in decades, a house of Congress is poised to seriously address the urgent problems facing our democracy so that it can work for every American. We are proud that the bill, as announced, will include bold and innovative reforms we pioneered, like automatic voter registration and small donor public financing, among others. Voters made it clear they are hungry for reform. They demonstrated that at the ballot box this fall by endorsing a slate of pro-democracy ballot initiatives and electing dozens of new members who campaigned on the need for reform. It is good to see Congress responding to voters and taking up their obligation to fix our democracy. It’s time to rein in big money in our politics, make voting less complicated for all Americans, stop gerrymandering, and make sure that our public officials work for all Americans.”
