Letter to Senate Leaders on FIRST STEP Act

The prison reform bill being considered by Congress includes several important improvements, but in a letter to Senate leadership the Brennan Center notes that any true reform effort must take steps to reduce the number of people entering prison in the first place.

In a letter to Senate lead­er­ship, members of the Bren­nan Center’s Justice Program said the bill, called the FIRST STEP Act, is “inad­equate to effect­ively address the miscar­riage of justice that is mass incar­cer­a­tion.” They argued that it should be amended to include sections of the Senten­cing Reform and Correc­tions Act.
