Controversy has developed over legislation before Congress to reform the U.S. voting system to make elections as secure and accurate as possible. After directing more money to electronic voting machines following the 2000 voting debacle in Florida, legislators now believe that a verifiable paper trail needs to be added to make the results reliable. Here to talk about the legislation and its potential impact is Lawrence Norden, an attorney in the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, where he works in the areas of voting systems, voting rights and government accountability. The title of his new book is The Machinery of Democracy: Protecting Elections in an Electronic World.
