Building a Diverse Bench
Panelists will discuss the state of racial, ethnic, and gender diversity on the state and federal benches, how existing institutions pose hurdles for women and people of color advancing to the bench, and how to help build more diverse benches for the future.
Judicial diversity is central to achieving a system of justice that lives up to its name. Yet President Trump’s nominees are the least diverse in decades. A recent Brennan Center report found an extreme lack of racial, ethnic, and gender diversity on state supreme courts across the country. Twenty-four states have all-white high court benches.
Vanita Gupta, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights; the Honorable Robert A. Gordon, bankruptcy judge for the District of Maryland; and Alicia Bannon, Managing Director of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice, and the Hon. Joseph A. Zayas, Administrative Judge of the Queens Supreme Court (Criminal Term) will discuss diversity on the state and federal benches, how existing institutions pose hurdles to women and people of color, and how to help build more diverse benches for the future. Keesha Gaskins-Nathan, Director of the Democratic Practice – United States Program at the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, will moderate.
