As leading American politicians call for criminal justice reform, on Thursday, May 14th, the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law will host a Capitol Hill Briefing with Congressional members, including Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken (D-Minn.), to discuss the need for a more effective justice system. At the briefing, law enforcement officials and criminal justice experts will present on the need for reforms to federal sentencing policy, law enforcement, and mental health services, to reduce America’s record-high incarcerated population while maintaining public safety. A recent report by the Brennan Center, What Caused the Crime Decline?, found that increased incarceration played only a minor role in the dramatic decline of American crime rates over the last two decades.
