Brennan Center Calls on House Leadership to Strengthen Congressional Oversight of the Intelligence Community

As part of a bipartisan group of 27 organizations, the Brennan Center endorsed a series of recommendations for ways to strengthen House oversight of the Intelligence Community in the new Congress.

In a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the Brennan Center joined 26 partner organizations in calling for reforms to improve Congressional oversight of intelligence matters. Among other recommendations, the letter proposed modernizing the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; empowering individual members of Congress in handling classified information and engaging with whistleblowers; and establishing a distinct committee or commission to conduct a broad-based review of Intelligence Community activities since 9/11.
