Strengthen Our Courts
Thanks to the influence of big money and partisan politics on state courts, the promise of even-handed justice in the United States is at risk. We are fighting back with bold solutions for judicial reform.
State judicial elections are awash in money, and judges regularly hear cases involving major contributors to their campaigns. Women and people of color are badly underrepresented on the bench. Politically motivated attacks on courts have become the norm. The Brennan Center works to protect the courts from the influence of politics and special interests. We track spending on judicial races and we propose reforms, including changes to how judges are chosen, to promote judicial independence and achieve a more diverse bench.
Making democracy work, for everyone.
Voter suppression. Gerrymandering. Big money in politics. Democracy is under attack. This year, the House of Representatives approved the For the People Act, which includes innovative solutions the Brennan Center developed on voting, ethics, campaign finance, and fair election maps.
