Judicial Election Television Advertising Data – All Cycles

This resource compiles spending and coding information for advertisements appearing in state supreme court elections.

Published: June 29, 2016

Since 2000, The New Politics of Judicial Elections series has analyzed state supreme court campaigns, including television ad spending and content. Each two-year cycle, the Brennan Center compiles data on advertisements airing in these elections. This information includes the sponsor name and type, the ad name, the spot count, estimated cost, and coding for tone, and themes of each advertisement. Please find the data for each year or cycle below.

All data on ad airings and spending on ads are calculated and prepared by Kantar Media/CMAG, which captures satellite data in the nation’s largest media markets. CMAG’s estimates do not reflect ad agency commissions or the costs of producing advertisements, nor do they reflect the cost of ad buys on local cable channels. Cost estimates are revised by Kantar Media/CMAG when it receives updated data, resulting in some fluctuations in the reported ad spending. The coding for ad theme and tone was prepared by the Brennan Center for Justice.
