  • Portugal v. Franklin County (Amicus Brief)

    The Washington Supreme Court is set to hear a case that seeks to overturn the Washington Voting Rights Act, a law that prohibits the use of discriminatory election systems by Washington counties, cities, school boards, and other local governments. The Brennan Center and co-counsel from Paul Hastings have filed an amicus brief in support of the WVRA and the plaintiffs who challenged Franklin County’s discriminatory at-large election system.
  • ACLU of Nevada v. The County of Nye and Mark Kampf

    The Brennan Center, along with the ACLU of Nevada and the law firm, Jenner & Block, filed a petition for an emergency writ of mandamus against Nye County in the Nevada Supreme Court to prevent the county from implementing an unlawful and insecure hand-counting process in the post-election period of November 2022.

  • ACLU of Nevada and Steven Bacus v. County of Nye and Mark Kampf

    The Brennan Center assisted the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada in seeking an emergency mandamus against Nye County in the Nevada Supreme Court to prevent the county from implementing an unlawful hand-counting process in the upcoming November election.

  • Allen v. Milligan (Formerly Merrill v. Milligan)

    The Supreme Court is set to hear a case that would maintain Alabama’s discriminatory congressional map and undermine Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The plaintiffs and respondents, a group of Black voters and civil rights organizations, claim that the map dilutes Black Alabamans’ voting power. The Brennan Center and partners at Debevoise & Plimpton have filed an amicus brief supporting the lower court’s decision finding the map violates the Voting Rights Act.
  • Moore v. Harper

    Relying on the radical and meritless “independent state legislature” theory, North Carolina legislators are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reinstate gerrymandered congressional maps that the state supreme court struck down for violating the state constitution.
  • Fair Maps Texas Action Committee v. Abbott

    A coalition of advocacy groups and several Black, Asian, and Latino Texas voters, represented by the Brennan Center and co-counsel, have filed a federal lawsuit claiming that Texas’s new congressional and legislative maps discriminate against voters of color and were drawn with race as the predominant factor, in violation of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
  • Holloway v. City of Virginia Beach (Amicus Brief)

    The Brennan Center and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, in partnership with pro bono counsel Paul Hastings LLP, have filed an amicus brief urging the Fourth Circuit to recognize vote dilution claims from coalitions of multiple nonwhite communities under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
