The League of Women Voters of Michigan moved to intervene as a defendant in a lawsuit in which plaintiffs allege that Michigan and most of its counties have not purged voters aggressively enough.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is set to hear a case that asks it to overturn decades of precedent and significantly scale back Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by foreclosing claims by multiracial coalitions of minority voters. The Brennan Center and co-counsel from Morrison & Foerster have filed an amicus brief supporting Appellants, the New Jersey Moderate Party and several New Jersey voters, focusing on the scope and meaning of New Jersey’s assembly clause.

The Brennan Center along with co-counsel Mayer Brown have filed an amicus brief supporting the plaintiffs-appellants, a group of Utah advocacy groups and voters challenging the state’s congressional map as a partisan gerrymander. The brief argues that the Utah Constitution includes specific democratic safeguards that prohibit partisan gerrymandering, and that state courts are more than capable of managing partisan gerrymandering claims.
