Galen Sheely

Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley — Research Director, State Voting Laws Roundup

Galen Sheely is the research director for the State Voting Laws Roundup project, jointly produced by the Brennan Center for Justice and the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He previously worked with the Karsh Institute of Democracy and the Virginia Department of Elections on state and national polling on voting experiences and perceptions of democratic legitimacy. In addition to democracy and election policy, his broader research interests include legislative behavior, race and ethnic politics, and research methods.

Sheely earned a BA in politics with a minor in philosophy from the University of Washington and a PhD from the University of Virginia. His dissertation research was supervised by Justin H. Kirkland and focused on the causes and consequences of state election legislation.
