In the current session (2009–2010), legislators in some states have already proposed proof of citizenship requirements for voter registration, introducing bills that, if enacted, would direct state election officials to deny voter registration to applicants until they have produced documentation proving themselves citizens of the United States. The proof of citizenship requirements vary in terms of the documentation considered satisfactory, the effective dates of implementation, and the conditions that apply to re-registrants. In past sessions, some bills have had proof of citizenship requirements in combination with a requirement that would-be voters produce photographic identification at the polls.
The chart here, last updated on 12/2/2009, sets forth the known bills and their current status. We will continue to update this chart as sessions move forward. The chart does not address the viability of any of these bills.
