Today, members of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing held their first public hearing. Created by an executive order signed December 18, 2014 by President Obama, the task force will hear witness testimony to promote effective crime reduction and to build public trust.

In light of the recent events in Ferguson, Staten Island, Cleveland, and around the country, the Obama Administration created a task force to improve community policing.

In the following testimony, the Brennan Center provides recommendations to shift federal funding toward new priorities and improve procedural justice.

Specifically, the Brennan Center urges the Task Force to:

  • Issue a model set of priorities;
  • Recommend that the President and executive agencies ensure federal criminal justice grants align funding with policy priorities;
  • Ensure videotaping of eyewitness identifications;
  • Ensure videotaping of custodial interrogations.
