The #NYCAlgorithms Coalition Campaign—a coalition of individuals and organizations including the AI Now Institute, BetaNYC, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, CAIR-NY, Center for Democracy & Technology, Center for IT Policy, Code for America’s National Agenda Council, Data for Black Lives, Data & Society, Drexel University, The Legal Aid Society, New York Civil Liberties Union, Princeton University, and Data, Responsibly—sent a joint letter to the Mayor of New York City offering recommendations for appointments to the new Automated Decision System Task Force (NYC). The coalition believes that the task force should represent diverse areas of expertise to help minimize the negative consequences of automated decision-making systems.

Recommendations include:

(1) Issue and subject matter expertise that should be represented on the task force;
(2) City agencies and specific staff that should be appointed or directed to cooperate with the task force;
(3) Organizations, institutions, and individuals that should be appointed;
(4) Considerations regarding transparency and conflicts of interest.

The coalition contends that the adoption of automated decision-making systems by public agencies and government bodies has the potential to increase inequality and government surveillance of poor and working class families.
