Media Advisory: Brennan Center for Justice for Justice at NYU School of Law Fifth Anniversary Awards Dinner

What: On October 4, 2001, the Brennan Center will pay tribute to values of American democracy, values at the heart of the Brennan Center’s mission: equality, liberty, and what Justice Brennan called “common human dignity.” The event will honor four distinguished individuals who have raised the visibility of the Center’s issues and will highlight several unsung heroes who have triumphed over injustice.

Who: Master of Ceremonies: Charles S. Dutton, actor and director

  • Special Guest Presenter: Alec Baldwin, actor and director
  • Honorees: Warren Beatty, producer, director, writer and actor, for educating the public about the value of clean elections and the importance of campaign finance reform;
  • Senator John McCain, U.S. Senator from Arizona and recent presidential candidate, for his heroic efforts to promote and pass federal campaign finance reform;
  • Deval L. Patrick, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of The Coca-Cola Company, and former U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, for his unyielding efforts to secure the civil rights of all Americans; and
  • Robert E. Rubin, Director, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Citigroup, Inc., and former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, for his inspiring humanitarian work to improve the plight of the urban poor.

The Brennan Center for Justice unites thinkers and advocates in pursuit of a vision of inclusive and effective democracy. Its mission is to develop and implement an innovative, nonpartisan agenda of scholarship, public education, and legal action that promotes equality and human dignity, while safeguarding fundamental freedoms.

Money raised at the event will support the Center’s non-partisan agenda. The Center’s projects include reforming the campaign finance system, promoting judicial independence, expanding access to justice and improving criminal justice policy.
