Author and Journalist Zachary Roth Joins Brennan Center

Roth will lead all print and digital publications as country enters crucial election year

June 26, 2018

Journalist and author Zachary Roth today joins the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law as Director of Content and Social Strategy. As part of the broader Communications and Strategy division, Roth will oversee all editorial content created for the Brennan Center.

Roth most recently served as senior editor at Talking Points Memo and as a national reporter for MSNBC. He is the author of The Great Suppression: Voting Rights, Corporate Cash, and the Conservative Assault on Democracy.

“As a renowned author and journalist with a deep knowledge of voting rights, money in politics, and legislative redistricting, Zack brings a critical level of expertise to Brennan Center’s efforts to protect our democracy,” said Lisa Benenson, Vice President for Communications & Strategy. “He will help bolster our strategic communication and public engagement, helping to ensure that Brennan Center remains an indispensable voice at this pivotal moment in our country’s history.”

In his new role, Roth will lead a team that produces the Brennan Center’s breakthrough reports and publications, as well as its public events. He’ll also lead a renewed effort to make the Brennan Center’s website a hub for up-to-date analysis and news about the issues affecting American democracy, justice, and the constitution.

“Working at the Brennan Center means working with the top minds in democracy reform in the country,” said Roth. “I’m delighted to join the organization at a time when it’s angling to reach new audiences and drive content to all those engaged in renewing our democracy and securing justice for all.”

Roth’s book was runner-up for the 2017 J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize awarded by Columbia University Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. Kirkus, in a starred review, called the book “a blistering account of concerted Republican efforts to quiet the political voices of minorities, students, and the poor.”

In addition to Talking Points Memo, Roth has written for The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New Republic, Slate, Politico, Salon, The Guardian, The New York Review of Books, and the Los Angeles Times, among others. He has worked as a reporter for Yahoo! News and as a writer and editor for the Washington Monthly, and he founded The Daily Democracy, a website that highlighted efforts to expand American democracy and hold accountable those looking to restrict it, regardless of party or ideology.

Zack lives with his family in Brooklyn and is a graduate of Yale University.
