Letter to House Judiciary Committee in Support of the For the People Act

The bill would commit to a renewed Voting Rights Act, restore voting rights to individuals with a felony conviction in their past, combat deceptive practices that suppress the vote, revitalize the campaign finance system, and more.

On January 29, 2019, the Brennan Center submitted a letter to the House Judiciary Committee expressing strong support for H.R. 1—the For the People Act of 2019. The letter was entered into the record during the Committee’s January 29 hearing, which focused on a sub-set of critical reforms contained in the For the People Act. The letter communicated the Brennan Center’s support for the measures under the Committee’s consideration, including provisions that reflect Congress’s commitment to a renewed Voting Rights Act; restore voting rights to individuals with a felony conviction in their past; combat deceptive practices that suppress the vote; reform the redistricting process; revitalize the campaign finance system; and strengthen federal ethics rules.
