Brennan Center and Allies Urge Members of Congress to Appropriately Address White Nationalist Violence

The Brennan Center and allies call on Congress to address white nationalist violence without expanding overbroad laws and discriminatory programs that have harmed the communities most impacted by it.

September 4, 2019

On September 42019, the Brennan Center -- along with the ACLU, Arab American Institute, Color of Change, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Muslim Advocates, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), and the Southern Poverty Law Center -- sent a letter to relevant House and Senate committees expressing our views on the best way to address white nationalist violence while protecting the rights of vulnerable communities. The letter opposes creating a new crime of domestic terrorism, reintroducing countering violent extremism (CVE) programs, and expanding surveillance authorities.
