Advances in Voter Registration Modernization

  • Election Day Registration: Maine implemented Election Day registration in 1973. Individuals may register in person at any time at a town office or City Hall, including on Election Day.
  • Preregistration: 17-year-olds can preregister to vote. Those who preregister can vote once they turn 18 without needing to re-register.

Gains from Voter Registration Modernization in Maine

  • In the November 2016 general election, 74,270 voters registered on Election Day or during the early voting period.
