Congressional Testimony: Ensuring Ballot Box Integrity
On September 28, 2016, Democracy Deputy Director Lawrence Norden testified before the House Subcommittee on Information Technology in a hearing entitled “Cybersecurity: Ensuring the Integrity of the Ballot Box.” This hearing provided an opportunity for the Committee to consider options to improve the integrity of our election systems.
The Brennan Center testimony built on research in the Brennan Center report America’s Voting Machines at Risk. The testimony emphasized the importance of distinguishing between genuine threats and sensationalistic and heated rhetoric when it comes to America’s election integrity, noting the biggest threats are attempts to undermine public confidence in the reliability of our elections systems. The testimony went on to detail important steps that election officials and the public have taken and should take to secure this November’s election. Finally, the testimony stressed the need to replace the oldest machines and equipment that over time will become less reliable.
