In Florida, three justices on the Supreme Court are up for a retention election. Retention elections in Florida are rarely controversial or expensive, and no one has been removed under their current selection and retention system in the past 40 years. However, this year three justices - Barbara Pariente, Peggy Quince, and R. Fred Lewis – are facing an anti-retention campaign that has drawn support from a number of groups, including the state Republican Party and Americans for Prosperity. The three justices in question are the only Democrats sitting on the state’s highest bench. In response, a group called Defend Justice from Politics has come together to support the retention of these three justices.

The three justice in Florida were retained in the November 6 election.

As we find ads that may not be tracked in our data (see methodology), we will post them on the website, but spending for such ads will not be included in our estimates.

Leading up to the November 2012 election, the Brennan Center will release real-time reports on television advertising in state supremec ourt elections, presented here at “Buying Time — 2012.” These reports continue the groundbreaking analysis first conducted in 2000 examining the sponsorship, content and costs of televised state supreme court campaign ads.
