VRM in the States: Missouri
Missouri currently has the Online Registration component of Voter Registration Modernization in place. Missouri also has electronic pollbooks in at least one county.
Advances in Voter Registration Modernization
- Online Voter Registration: Missouri launched online voter registration through the Secretary of State’s office in 2013. Eligible citizens can use the system to register to vote or update their registration information even if they do not have a state driver’s license or non-driver ID. Registrants can access the online form only via a touchscreen device, since they must provide a digital signature using their finger or a stylus. While the application is entirely online from the user’s perspective, election officials must print the form to process the registration.
- Electronic Pollbooks: Forty-nine out of 116 Missouri elections jurisdictions used electronic pollbooks to sign in voters in 2014.
Gains from Voter Registration Modernization in Missouri
- Between the launch of online voter registration in November 2014 and an interview with Brennan Center staff conducted in March 2015, 5,000 new voter registration applications had been submitted online.
