Buying Time -- 2010: Washington

September 19, 2010

Spending on TV ads in Washington State judicial elections has not been as high, historically, as spending in other states:  Washington ranked 14th nationally in terms of TV spending from 2000-2009 (and 12th overall in candidate fundraising), according to a comprehensive study of the decade.  Three justices faced elections in 2010:  Chief Justice Barbara Madsen was unopposed in her bid for an additional term; Justice James Johnson defeated primary challenger Stan Rumbaugh and will run unopposed on the November 2 ballot; and incumbent Justice Richard Sanders is being challenged by Charlie Wiggins.

To date in 2010, no television advertising has run on networks that are carried by the satellite that the Brennan Center's partner, TNS Media Intelligence/CMAG, uses to capture judicial campaign advertisements.  One group, however, reported spending $70,000 during the primary campaign to air on local cable channels an advertisement attacking Justice Johnson.

Leading up to the November 2010 election, the Brennan Center released real-time reports on television advertising in state Supreme Court elections, presented here at “Buying Time — 2010.” These reports continue the groundbreaking analysis first conducted in 2000 examining the sponsorship, content and costs of televised state Supreme Court campaign ads.
