Buying Time -- 2010: Ohio

September 19, 2010

Three justices on the Ohio Supreme Court are running for re-election in 2010.  Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger is squaring off against challenger Mary Jane Trapp; Justice Paul Pfeifer is running unopposed; and Chief Justice Eric Brown is facing a challenge from Justice Maureen O’Connor.  With only two competitive Supreme Court elections this fall, it is unlikely that Ohio will see the same record levels of spending that it saw in the years from 2000-2009.  During that decade, Ohio ranked third in candidate fundraising between Alabama and Pennsylvania, and ranked first in spending on TV ads, with candidates, the political parties, and outside interest groups collectively spending more than $21 million.

Judith Ann Lanzinger retained her seat and Maureen O'Connor ousted sitting Chief Justice Eric Brown, who was appointed in April 2010.

Leading up to the November 2010 election, the Brennan Center released real-time reports on television advertising in state Supreme Court elections, presented here at “Buying Time — 2010.” These reports continue the groundbreaking analysis first conducted in 2000 examining the sponsorship, content and costs of televised state Supreme Court campaign ads.
