This volume is a sample of the Brennan Center's work on all fronts in the fight for democracy and justice in 2018. Material is drawn from Brennan Center reports, policy proposals, and issue briefs, in addition to public remarks, legal briefs, congressional testimony, and op-ed pieces written by Brennan Center staff and fellows.
A Brennan Center review of bills already introduced in state legislatures in 2019 shows that across the country, legislators are considering changes to state courts that would diminish the role or independence of the judiciary, or make it harder for judges to do their job.
The U.S. Supreme Court isn’t the only institution roiled by a highly politicized judicial selection process. In this report, the Brennan Center calls for reform to state supreme courts, where high-cost elections have become the norm.
