Brennan Center Praises Cuomo’s Support of Democracy Reforms

New York stands poised to be a national leader in reforming our systems of democracy. We welcome the Governor’s leadership on these issues and are looking forward to helping him make these reforms a reality.

January 10, 2013

Following Governor Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State address, the Brennan Center released this statement from President Michael Waldman:

“New York stands poised to be a national leader in reforming our systems of democracy. Governor Cuomo’s strong call for voluntary public funding of campaigns, robust disclosure, and improvements in our voting system are exciting and much needed reforms. Giving candidates the option of funding their campaigns through a small donor matching system, rather than relying on a few wealthy donors, coupled with increased disclosure of campaign donors, are meaningful reforms that will boost accountability and help curb corruption. Ensuring widespread access to the ballot would excite the electorate and further strengthen our democracy. We welcome the Governor’s leadership on these issues and are looking forward to helping him make these reforms a reality.”

See the Brennan Center’s report detailing how a public financing system with small donor matching could increase fairness and diversity in New York elections.
