Income inequality is at an all-time high. Wages are stagnant. The cost of living rises sharply every year. Yet the Trump administration plans to slash federal housing funding by nearly $9 billion, potentially affecting millions of low-income Americans. What effect will this have on access to the American Dream and the health of our democracy?

In a Brennan Center public conversation, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro will discuss the state of American opportunity and prosperity today. His new book, An Unlikely Journey: Waking Up from My American Dream, tells the story of his life and the circumstances that enabled him to succeed in the face of great odds. Drawing on his experience as Mayor of San Antonio and HUD Secretary, Castro, a rising political star, will discuss how to make the economy more fair, help future generations of Americans escape poverty, and keep the American Dream alive.
