Advances in Voter Registration Modernization

  • Election Day Registration: Maine implemented Election Day registration in 1973. Individuals may register in person at any time at a town office or City Hall, including on Election Day.
  • Portability: Registered voters who move within the state without updating their registration can, on Election Day, change their address with their municipal registrar and then cast a regular ballot at their new polling place.

Gains from Voter Registration Modernization in Maine

  • For the 2014 general election, same day registrations constituted 21.9% of all registrations received in the two years preceding the election.
