Three of Michigan’s seven Supreme Court seats are up for election in 2014. Candidates are nominated at party conventions and run in nonpartisan elections. Republican Justice David Viviano is seeking reelection and will be challenged by Democratic Circuit Judge Deborah Thomas and Libertarian attorney Kerry Morgan. The seats currently held by Justices Brian Zahra and Michael Cavanagh are also up for election. Justice Cavanagh, a Democrat, is retiring, while Justice Zahra, a Republican, will seek reelection. Zahra, Republican Circuit Judge James Robert Redford, Democratic Court of Appeals Judge Bill Murphy, Natural Law Party attorney Doug Dern, and Democratic attorney Richard Bernstein will all be running for the two open seats. The top two vote-getters will serve eight-year terms on the bench.
