How much money was spent in the 2012 election, and who spent it? What role did small donors play? And how will 2012 shape the politics and policy of the 113th Congress? The Brennan Center hosted a half-day symposium on Tuesday, June 18th to examine the last year’s election and a way forward. An expert panel discussed new and innovative policy responses to 2012, how to reduce the influence of the donor class, and increase citizen participation in politics and government.

Representative Van Hollen has kept the campaign finance reform agenda vibrant at a particularly challenging crossroads. He will discuss his efforts leading the fight for government transparency and accountability as the lead sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act, the lead plaintiff in litigation seeking to hold the Federal Election Commission to account, and a co-sponsor of Rep. David Price’s Empowering Citizens Act.
