The Brennan Center’s recent report, Federal Prosecution for the 21 Century, proposes a mission shift for federal prosecution: A reorientation toward the twin goals of reducing crime and reducing mass incarceration. It recommends that the Justice Department institutionalize this change by implementing new priorities and success measures. This analysis provides estimates for how much the reforms could reduce prison populations, and projects that if those estimates were reached, the Justice Department could save billions.
