Brennan Center Statement on John McCain’s Death
A statement from the Brennan Center’s Michael Waldman.
New York, N.Y. – Upon news of Senator John McCain’s death, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law President Michael Waldman issued the following statement:
“All of us at the Brennan Center are saddened to hear the news of Senator John McCain’s death.
“He was an extraordinary champion of America’s democratic ideals. We appreciate especially his leadership of the bipartisan drive to curb the role of big money in American politics. He showed courage and a commitment to country that few can hope to match.
“We were honored to represent Senator McCain in court in the fight for open ballots, to defend the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law in court, and to work with him on other issues. Just last year, we were grateful for his introduction of the Honest Ads Act. He never stopped fighting for democracy.
”As many will note, he did this with humor, passion, and rare candor. He was willing to put principle ahead of party. That’s always been rare. And we will miss it more than ever.
“We should all aim to honor his service by standing up for the values for which he fought. We wish solace and comfort for his family.”
John McCain was the first recipient of the Brennan Center’s annual Legacy Award in 2001.
