City Council Overrides Mayoral Veto

Last week the New York City Council voted 39 to 10 to override Mayor Bloomberg’s veto of a bill that establishes an inspector general for the New York Police Department. This vote comes on the heels of federal Judge Shira Scheindln’s ruling ordering a court-appointed monitor to review the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk program. Read more here.

New Voting Restrictions in North Carolina

North Carolina recently instituted one of the harshest and most restrictive voting laws in recent memory. The state is one of several that moved quickly to approve new restrictions after the Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act. 35 Years for Manning

Last week, a military judge sentenced Chelsea Manning, formerly known as Pfc. Bradley Manning, to 35 years in prison for violating the Espionage Act and other federal laws by disclosing hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks.
