COD Conference 2012

2012 Conference: July 19-20
Please join us at New York University School of Law in July for a conference of the Community-Oriented Defender (COD) Network. View the agenda (subject to change).
Sessions will focus on listening to client voices, developing holistic internal office culture, discussion and demonstrations of low-cost Holistic Defense Practices ready for implementation, and recent legal developments relevant to Holistic Defense. We will provide numerous opportunities for networking with leaders in the worlds of indigent defense and community-oriented defense. CLE credits will be offered in regard to several panels.
Highlights include:
- Keynote Speech and Q&A with Regina Kelly. The subject of the nationally-acclaimed film American Violet, will discuss her experiences with advocates after a wrongful prosecution started her on a journey through several different court systems and several sets of attorneys.
- Presentation by Jon Rapping, a leader in Holistic Defense training, about building and supporting an office culture supportive of Holistic Defense Practices.
- Screening excerpts and discussion of Gideon’s Army, a documentary about training young holistic defenders at the Southern Public Defender Training Center.
- Presentation from John Stuart, Minnesota Chief Public Defender, about his work in representing veterans and how lessons learned there might apply in representing other clients who have experienced trauma.
About the COD Network
The Community-Oriented Defender Network is a coalition of public defender offices and related service providers coordinated by the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law since 2003. COD Network members seek to address the needs of clients beyond the immediate criminal case, to engage in systemic reform of failed criminal justice policies, and to enlist the involvement of community members in developing and implementing these problem-solving approaches. Nine years after its founding, the COD Network includes nearly 200 members, including 60 defender programs.
The COD Network holds an annual conference to bring together various members of the defender community to exchange ideas and keep each other updated about relevant developments such as promising research or strategies that improve the practice, new state or federal legislation, and litigation successes.
