Enforcement
Across the country, growing numbers of workers are routinely subject to minimum wage and overtime violations, unsafe working conditions, discrimination, and retaliation for speaking up or trying to organize. Their ability to seek recourse is often constrained - by lack of legal status, by lack of access to legal services, and by lack of effective government enforcement of workplace laws.
To respond, the Brennan Center is working with immigrant advocates to develop new strategies for enforcing our nation's employment and labor laws without driving vulnerable workers further underground. Our work reflects a multi-part strategy: conducting original research to document the scope of this growing problem; promoting legislative reform of wage protections; developing blueprints for overhauling administrative wage enforcement practices by state labor departments; and developing innovative local enforcement policies.
