Analysis
On October 4, 2008, Louisiana's voters will select candidates to fill a vacancy created by retiring Chief Justice Pascal Calogero. The three candidates running for the first district seat are Republican Judge Jimmy Kuhn, Democratic Judge Roland Belsome and Republican Judge Greg Guidry. In a contest for the fifth district seat, incumbent Justice Kitty Kimball is seeking re-election to the court. Her opponent is First Circuit Judge Jeff Hughes. Should Kimball be re-elected to the court, she will become the court's Chief Justice.
Leading up to the November 2008 election, the Brennan Center is releasing real-time reports on television advertising in state Supreme Court elections. The 2008 reports continue the groundbreaking analysis first conducted in 2000 examining the sponsorship, content and costs of televised state Supreme Court campaign ads.
