Election Day Registration
- For eligible but previously unregistered voters, 8 states currently offer full Election Day registration systems. Those states are Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Alaska offers same day registration for presidential elections.
- Ohio and North Carolina offered same day registration for part of the early voting period in 2008.
- For already registered voters, 8 states allow registered voters who move to cast ballots that count even if they do not update their registrations before Election Day.
- At least 21 states considered Election Day registration legislation this term. Those states include: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and West Virginia.
