Voting Rights Restoration Efforts in Arizona
Current felony disenfranchisement laws
Arizona now disenfranchises people with felony convictions while they are serving sentences of probation or imprisonment and parole; people with more than one felony conviction are permanently disenfranchised.
Legislative advocacy
In February, 2005, the Brennan Center wrote a letter to the Arizona House of Representatives in support of a bill to restore the vote to all Arizona citizens once they have completed their sentences.
Public Education Efforts
A recent op-ed in the Arizona Daily Star focused on the state's conditioning the right to vote on the payment of fees, fines, and restitution. The commentary highlights how this requirement resembles the poll tax, barring people of color and poor people from the polls.
