Mid-Minnesota Legal Assistance (MMLA), representing 10,000 plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit, has reached a settlement with Minnesota, requiring the State to provide free translators to non-English speaking people, and to translate application and renewal forms for health and welfare benefits into at least seven languages. The settlement ends a 1999 lawsuit that alleged that Minnesota’s welfare agency discriminated against non-English speaking people who were eligible for public assistance benefits, including Medicaid, welfare and subsidized health insurance.
