Nearly 35,000 lawyers in France, backed by the country’s 181 bar associations, staged a nationwide strike to demand more funding for court-appointed lawyers who provide free legal representation to poor clients in civil as well as criminal cases. Court-appointed lawyers, who are currently paid $75 per case, say that their payment system has not been evaluated since 1990. They are demanding that the payment system be restructured to compensate them on an hourly basis. Tuesday’s strike was the second strike to take place within the past week as negotiations with the Justice Ministry continue.
