In a letter to the New York Times editor, U.S.
District Judge Shira Scheindlin responds to Adam Liptak's column
addressing judicial salaries, and argues that "if America wants the highest
quality judiciary - one that reflects our nation's diversity - we must not
limit the opportunity to those who have already built a nest egg in the private
sector. Pointing out that judges have not received a raise since 1994,
Scheindlin states that this year, "judges are the only federal employees who
will not even receive a cost of living adjustment.
