Date: April 22, 2011
According to the NY Daily News, “Thousands of formerly homeless families got a temporary reprieve Thursday when a judge ordered the city to keep paying their rent - for now. . . . The Legal Aid Society of New York argued in Manhattan Supreme Court that the city entered into a contract with 15,000 families when it enrolled them in the Advantage program. . . .The $200 million, two-year city, state and federal program was created to move families out of shelters and into permanent housing. . . . ‘The cold, hard fact is that 15,000 formerly homeless households are facing imminent eviction and repeat homelessness,’ said Steven Banks, a Legal Aid Society lawyer. . . . The city's lawyers disputed that the program documents were binding and said the rental subsidy ended when the state pulled its funding. . . . Judge Judith Gische said she would announce her final decision on May 2.”
