La Raza Centro Legal (Ca.) attorney Paul Cohen represents three former stablehands in their efforts to obtain thousands of dollars in unpaid wages from their former employer, Charter Oak Farms Ranch. The workers allege that they were paid between $800 and $1,200 per month, even though they often worked 15-hour days, were rarely allowed vacations or two-day weekends, and slept in a shack between crates of manure. The California Labor Commission directed the ranch to pay the workers, all of whom are Mexican immigrants, a total of more than $50,000 in back wages. The ranch has appealed the ruling.
