Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ) President Melville D. Miller says LSNJ began a program in 1994 with pharmaceutical company Merck that encourages corporate counsel to participate in pro bono activities "in an organized, systemic way." Miller calls the Merck initiative "very successful," says that LSNJ has started a similar project with Lucent Technologies, and is currently discussing similar projects with other corporate legal departments. Despite this and other civil legal services initiatives in New Jersey, Miller says, "In New Jersey at least eighty percent, that is four out of five people, are not able to get a lawyer for the civil legal problems that they have each year."
