In a series of short answer essays, Fixing Justice, the Brennan Center  asks Fmr. Gov. Mario Cuomo, Fmr. Sen. Gary Hart, Nina Totenberg and others, what qualities they would seek in filling the next vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. For example, Emily Bazelon of Slate, said the goal of the next president "should be to find someone who can speak with a roar that matches Justice Scalia's, and who also has an overarching vision for the court to answer Scalia's originalism." Fmr. Sen. Gary Hart (CO) said, "it is probably too much to ask that appointments to the Supreme Court not be made simply to satisfy ideologues and interest groups," while Frederick A.O. Schwarz, Jr. of the Brennan Center recommended that the next nominee value "restraints on power, a system of checks & balances, and the preservation of a vibrant democracy."
