Virginia Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling has proposed implementing a merit-based judicial selection system in the state. According to the Newport News Daily Press editorial board, the Republican told newspaper staff that “Virginia's procedure for selection of state court judges by the General Assembly is based too much on politics and not enough on merit.”   The editorial discusses the history of judicial selection in the state and nationally, and ends by concluding that “it's time to look at alternatives to Virginia's 1870 system and consider a plan that ensures our state's judiciary is as independent and impartial as possible.“
